17 teams comprised of 60 developers participated in the boc hackathon #fintech while the ideas that were presented at the pitching on Sunday evening covered a large part of the latest trends in the field of fintech, such as banking chatbots, blockchain applications, mobile payments, wallets, piggy accounts and other trends.

45 mentors coming from the Bank of Cyprus, the supporters, the market and the academic community participated in the process, while the high level of the teams and their applications made it particularly difficult for the jury to decide on the winners.

The 1st prize of € 6,000 was awarded to the team figpay for their application for payments executed without any equipment and with the help of facial recognition.

The 2nd prize of € 4,000 was awarded to the team Empty Coffee Cups for their application “Personal Financial Management (PFM)” which includes a chatbot.

The 3d prize of € 2,000 was awarded to the team Heroes Lab for their application for real time transfers between customers, legal entities and banks, using blockchain technology.

An additional prize of € 1,000 was awarded to the team Error 404: Name Not Found comprised of two sixteen-year-old students. The team implemented facial recognition applications, and applications indicating the closest ATM as well as the account balance from a third application through API.

The boc hackathon and the presentations were attended by several executives of Bank of Cyprus, including Mr. Christodoulos Patsalides, the Deputy CEO and Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Charis Pouangare, the Director of Consumer and SME Banking, and Mr. Philippos Leandrou, Manager Information Technology.

Mr. Demetris Papallis, Manager IT Governance, Digital Transformation & Business Development at Bank of Cyprus, stated: “The boc hackathon resulted in really interesting applications developed by the teams that participated. The teams worked with professionalism and perseverance and implemented impressive solutions. We saw that through the cooperation of young people that have fresh ideas with our experienced executives and the mentors that supported us technologically and operationally, excellent results can be achieved. Boc hackathon #fintech will help Bank of Cyprus create new innovative businesses, services and products.”

We would like to thank all the contestants, mentors, judges, supporters, the Bank of Cyprus executives as well as all those who participated in this innovative event.
